People generally think that its source lies in Lupercalia who are Roman annual celebrations in honor of Lupercus, fields and herds protector (celebrations of purification, resurrection and fertility), that happened around mid-February. It is also commonly said that Charles of Orleans sent love letters on February 14th to Mary of Cleves
